Backend Engineer (Java)

About the role

Kolomoni Microfinance Institution is seeking a Backend Engineer to design, develop, test, deploy and maintain secure, scalable backend services that power its customer‑facing products. You will work closely with the CTO to ensure reliability and security in production.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop secure, scalable APIs and business logic in Java using Spring Boot or equivalent.
• Create and optimise database structures, data‑access components and SQL queries.
• Implement transaction, concurrency and idempotency controls, handling retries and partial failures safely.
• Apply authentication, authorisation, and security controls to protect data in transit, at rest and in logs.
• Develop logging, monitoring and audit capabilities to reconstruct incidents.
• Write automated tests, participate in peer reviews and resolve production defects.

Required profile

• Hands‑on experience building and maintaining production backend services in Java.
• Proficiency with Spring Boot (or similar), relational databases, SQL and REST API design.
• Understanding of asynchronous, event‑driven architectures, caching and application security.
• Experience with Git, automated testing, containerisation and modern deployment pipelines.
• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience in financial services or payments is a plus.
