Associate Human Rights Officer – UN OHCHR West Africa

About the role

The Associate Human Rights Officer will be based in the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights West Africa Regional Office in Banjul. Reporting to the Deputy Regional Representative, the officer will gather, verify and analyse information on human rights issues, including gender dimensions, and support the preparation of analytical products and coordinated monitoring activities.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor implementation of international human rights and humanitarian law, and follow up on recommendations from UN mechanisms.
• Collect, document and analyse evidence‑based information on civil, economic, social and political rights, ensuring data is interoperable and gender‑sensitive.
• Conduct field verification missions, draft analytical reports and support fact‑finding investigations.
• Draft and review human rights reports, briefings, legal and policy analyses, integrating gender and leave‑no‑one‑behind perspectives.
• Provide technical research and support to national counterparts on legislation, policies and security‑sector reforms.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s) in human rights, law, political science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in human rights or related areas.
• Demonstrated ability to mobilise support from a wide range of partners and communicate complex technical matters to diverse audiences.
• Strong knowledge of international human rights law, norms and standards, and ability to integrate gender equality and survivor‑centred approaches.
